My kids are 13, 10, 5 (and 3)

ANIMAL FARM by George Orwell is AWESOME for teaching children about communism. I was amazed.

Julie of the Wolves - EXCELLENT read-aloud for the learning about the tundra climate and animals. Beware of Native American-type "spirit" stuff. We loved this book, but I just explained to my children why that stuff is not true.

We also liked 2 books from "The Royal Diaries" series: The one about Catherine the Great and the one about Anastasia.

Fairy Tales

Winthrop, Elizabeth. The Little Humpbacked Horse.

Lewis, J Patrick. At the Wish of the Fish and The Frog Princess.

Ransome, Arthur. The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship.

Lurie, Alison. The Black Geese.

My kids enjoyed these, in addition to the ones recommended.

I posted our favorite books for my children (ages 0-10) at http://www.squidoo.com/russia-geography-lesson . That link is for the first 2 weeks, and the links for the additional weeks can be found toward the bottom of that webpage. I have included both picture books and chapter books.
